A large sapphire and diamond ring, circa 1910. Myanmar (still often referred to in the jewellery trade as Burma) is a source of some of the world’s best sapphires. Famed for their purity and saturation of colour, their best examples show a deep, rich blue, with clean crystals that allow the stone to sparkle despite its depth of colour. This circular-cut sapphire shows a beautiful deep blue, typical of Burmese stones, and sits in a protective claw-setting at the centre of an early 20th century diamond cluster of antique cushion-shaped diamonds, the mount bringing out its floral outline. Most notably popularised in recent history as the choice of engagement ring for both Princess Diana and Kate Middleton, this sapphire and diamond cluster is a timeless design for an engagement ring.
